I have had some fantastic fun teaching Bob Ross’s wet-on-wet technique and I have travelled throughout the world teaching this wonderful way to paint. The most popular questions that people have asked are below:
What is the wet-on-wet technique and why is it easy to do?
Bob Ross developed an unusual painting method by applying wet oil on top of wet oil without waiting for each layer to dry. This is what makes it possible to paint a picture in 30mins. Each coloured paint that he created had a variant amount of oil, making each one different in its ability to ’slide’ on the canvas. He also created various types of brushes that work the oil to create unbelievable trees, bushes, mountains etc in a matter of seconds! Even those who have never considered painting before can complete a painting in very little time and it is so simple that even with no previous experience, you can start immediately and get results. Your family and friends will be amazed at what you can do!
What do I need to start painting?
The first thing to do is familiarise yourself with the products and techniques that Bob Ross uses. You can do this by watching him on SKY T.V, by buying his DVD’s and books or by going on a workshop with a qualified instructor. All these means will help you to bring out the painter in you.
How do I decide what to paint?
There are many scenes to choose from in Bob Ross’s books and DVD’s. You can also take a picture from your camera and paint that? Or just develop one from your own imagination, maybe there is a secret place that you have always dreamed of? Be inventive!
Can anyone use these techniques?
Absolutely! Bob Ross designed his method for everyone. There is no elitism or specialness in his teaching. He took away all the mystery surrounding the possibility of becoming an artist and made it accessible to everyone. This is what makes it so striking! You can do this just for fun, as a hobby or a way of expressing yourself.
Is it expensive?
The initial outlay will need some commitment. Once you have the easel, paints and brushes, then it gets easier to ‘top-up’ your paints as you need them. It is a well worth investment for the hours of joy it will give to you.
What are the benefits of painting?
The freedom to create whatever you want on canvas and to watch that taking shape! The confidence it brings and the sense of achievement. Even to prove to yourself and anyone who told you that you could not paint, that in fact you ‘can do it!’ And of course the ‘joy of painting!’
